Petrol is more powerful. You try. Take petrol and diesel. Light them with match stick. Petrol will burn quickly.

Hello!! :o) Generally speaking - a petrol [gas] engine will have more speed obtaining horsepower whereas a diesel will have more weight pulling torque. Craig!! :o)

which is easier to work on and lasts longer?

Petrol is more powerful for outright horsepower but diesel engines usually have more torque (low end grunt).

petrol (gasoline) is a much more explosive & volatile than diesel.
If u want to blow something up, use petrol.
If u want to go very fast in a vehicle, use petrol.
If u need lots of torque from an engine, use diesel.
Diesel is can produce very high speeds, as well, just not quite as high as from petrol vehicles.

The reason people think diesel is more powerful is because how the engine is constructed to achieve power from diesel fuel.

petrol engines run at higher rpm, lower torque & lower compression whereas diesel engines run at lower rpm, have higher torque & much higher compression.
The torque from a diesel engine is a result of the very high compression levels used to produce combustion.

Diesel has an octane rating of 15 - 25 while gasoline used in todays cars usually runs 85 - 95.

Gasoline will ignite a lot easier than diesel too.

Diesel engines will by far outlast gas (Petrol) engines in any given set of circumstances mainly because they have considerably less moving parts.
Modern diesels r not only quiet & efficient, but they out perform their gas counterparts by a large margin except when it comes to speed. You will never see a diesel being used in Formula 1 racing. There u need a petrol fired engine using an octane level of 110 or higher.

It is all about heat content. It is measured in btu's.
Gasoline-20,400 btu/lb
diesel fuel-19,300 btu/lb
by the way,straight ethanol-12,800 btu/lb

diesel is the future! diesels have come a long way in recent years & the current market has these common rail diesels which r far more powerful than their predecessors. diesel & petrol engines r constructed exactly the same except diesels have a higher combustion ratio (because its the compressed air that ignites the fuel).
diesels last longer as they r a lower revving engine where as petrol is run at higher revs thus causing more wear on the engine.
my current car is a 2002 Renault lacuna 1.9dci. which has a 1900cc common rail turbo diesel engine. it has 130 bhp does 0-60 in around 10 secs l guess & l topped it out on the autobahn at 135mph with 3 guys in it & a load of work equipment (how much faster do u want to go?). plus l average around 40mpg (UK).
sweet.

power!!!!! we can compare energy avl in fuel .. (petrol has more energy than diesel

Talking about engines, Diesel is more powerful due to the higher compression ratio.

Hi! Patna rose. This is Anup from Nasik. l am student of Automobile Engg. The diesel engines are more powerful indeed. The reason behind this is - the compression ratio of diesel engines is more than petrol engines. For the same reason diesel engines are heavier than petrol engines so as to resist higher compression ratio.
For any other querries related to automobiles e-mail me at aksanup9287.com. May be l shall have better solutions to your problems.
Goodbye!!

obviously diesel..it has more no.of carbohydrates...so it gives more heat when burnt...but pollutes a lot when compared to petrol cars..
