Firstly u should understand that the 800 is a small car which is just nearly sufficient for 4 adults. That too if the driver & the passenger next to him r reasonably broad, there is this problem of the shoulders clashing with each other causing severe disturbance to the driver while changing gears as well as while making turns.
Another factor comes in is that if u wish to go for two days or so, then luggage for five people will be substantial with special problem coming in when u have to carry a Water storage jug of over 5 ltrs. In the Omni, the back passenger can easily lean back & get the stuff out from within the vehicle itself.
Learning to drive is more or less similar in both the vehicles.
However, if u r the type of person, who values more comfort than space & convenience then the 800 is the option to go (specially if u r of a lean built).
As far as interiors r concerned, both of them can be spiced up to suit ur needs.
Another aspect where the Omni scores is the facility of fitting Gas based cylinders (CNG or LPG) in ur vehicle without having to compromise heavily on space. This will heavily reduce ur expenditure in the long drives that u intend to take.
The 800 is most comfortable while regularly driving with maximum three adults & one kid (preferable below 10 years) & their luggage (my personal experience). Anything above that severly hampers the riding experience. Personally, l have even driven with a total of 8 adults & one kid, but that is a different story which none of the passengers would like to relive.
Both the vehicles have reasonable resale value. Used Omnis r specially in demand for its space by local traders & if it comes fitted with a Gas Kit, then u get a better price as well.

Maruti 800 is good. Easy and cheap to maintain.

Extend your budget a little bit and go for the alto. It is a good beginners car. But if you want space, there is very little option for you. So, go for the omni. Do check out the indica xeta. It has a few niggling issues. Otherwise, it is a good car.

Hello,
l would not suggest the Omni at all except to commute in the city at low speeds. It is an unstable & very unsafe design. It is an old van & it seriously lacks the appeal as a family. It is extremely dangerous on the highway with a small engine & lack of basic safety features. Please forget that such a car is available for private use.
The 800 is a great car but it is showing it is age. It is an extremely capable city car with ample performance & a bare bones interior package. I'd suggest u to buy one if you're on a tight budget. It is relatively maintenance free compared to other cars in the market. It is a great to learn driving in but it may get a little impractical on the highway. It is not safe on the highway & when fully loaded it is a real drag to overtake other vehicles on the highway. A great city car, but not a good highway car.
My suggestion - Pick up the Maruti Suzuki Alto LX. It is available for just under Rs.3,00,000 now with the new budget announced. Go take a test drive. You will know the difference. It is relatively better than the 800 in almost all aspects except price. Hope u find my answer useful!
