If you can wait for some time like till diwali, you will find some more alternatives.
Maruti is planning an Engine Upgrade to K series engine.
You might get stuck with the older engine.
Also, A-star, the concept Car, is supposed to be launched around that time with few changes and is considered to be an upgrade to highly successful Alto series.

Alto -- Maruti car with good resale & good mileage no doubt but there r lot of negatives.
1. It has very low ground clearance & the ride is bumpy
2. Looks r dated
3. Maruti cars r not known for their strong body, also after say 2-3 years or some 20000 kms u would find lots of sounds coming from the car. Leave aside Alto even Swifts r know for that.
4. Gear shifts r not that good, it vibrates a lot too.
5. It is underpowered

If u cannot afford anything else then alto is the car for u otherwise Santro Xing is a better option but u have to pay some 40K more than Alto to buy it, SANTRO XING is the Best in class, not Alto.
